Amazing India!

India was an adventure for sure! My first response to India was a total overload to my senses! There is so much of everything! So many people, cars, outdoor shops, but also NOISES, COLORS and SMELLS! There is constant noise: vehicles driving, animals calling, and horns honking!Everywhere you look; bright color in everything! Smells of food cooking, incense burning--all kinds of smells! Our guesthouse was located right down from the church where Mother Teresa spent her last days. The people in this area were very poor, many lived on the streets. The “shops” were merely stands set up to sell their goods. I'm sure they exist in Kolkata, but I never saw large hotels or restaurants. Everything was squashed together! We walked about a mile from the guesthouse two nights to a McDonalds to eat.  We walked through tons of people, between shops that were on our left and our right. It was very crowded! We did one "tourist" day where we went to the Ganges River, the Queen Victoria Memorial, the Howrah Bridge and Howrah Train Station, William Carey's church, a Hindu temple, and several markets.

Three days, we worked at one of Mother Teresa's facility...Prem Dan. It is for the destitute and dying...I was amazed and have the greatest respect for the Sisters and the organization they run to take care of these people. There are multiple facilities in Mother Teresa’s organization, Prem Dan is one of these. Each day, the Sisters are there, and have a few Indian workers. They depend on 100 volunteers a day to help out, and it seems to run super smoothly! There is little direction, you just dive in! There is usually a volunteer that has been there before, and everyone just teaches each other! There were many volunteers from all over the world. Some worked one day; some had been working for a month, or longer. When we arrived, the patients were out in a courtyard each morning. While they were there, Beth (another Beth!) and I, and others, would wash down a stack of mattresses, then put them back on small bed frames, and put on clean sheets, and pillows. Then, it was time for tea and biscuits for the patients. We served those, and helped them eat/drink if they could not manage it themselves. We then washed the cups. Then, we would use lotion or oil, and rub their feet and hands. After that, lunchtime! Lunch came from a kitchen in huge pots, and was rice, Dal, fruit and bread. We served that, helped them eat, then washed the dishes! All of the washing was done outside at sinks, with a hose and soap. Emily worked each morning washing clothes in a large tub, then they were rinsed in another large tub, and taken to the roof to hang and dry. Later, if we had time, we would go up and take the laundry off the line. Larry and the guys from our group did similar tasks in the men’s section of the facility. And this goes on everyday! It was such a blessing to know that these precious people had a place to stay. It was as clean as could be in that environment, and I really appreciated that it has been there for years, and will continue! The nuns are in for the duration!

One other day, we went to a slum school. The children there...I would guess around 50 were from 3 years-to-7 years old, learning English, to read and write, and do math. I loved working with them. They live in an area where their parents are day laborers, and leave them in the slum during the day while they work. The pastor and his wife go from household to household, bringing the children into school to learn. They have a small room for the school, so the pastor told me they only take the poorest students whose parents cannot pay for them to go to public school. They were precious children, wanting to learn and study! The pastor and his wife have such a vision! Not only do they want these children to learn to read and write, but to also learn about Jesus! This was, of course, my favorite thing we did in India!

Thanks to Emily for taking AWESOME pictures! I could only post a few here, but she did a great job!
I thank God daily that He continues to lead us One Step at a Time!

"Winter in Dubai"

Winter in Dubai is unlike winter anywhere else I have lived! I can still doze by the pool in the afternoon...what a blessing! Even though it is slightly cooler...60’s for lows, and 70’s for highs...Larry is still wearing short sleeved shirts and shorts! I have forced myself to wear jeans, and my “Toms” as I do not want to wear the same clothes year-round! There is an occasional need for closed-in shoes, and a jacket.
We arrived back to Dubai just before New Year’s Day. Everything seemed about the same as when we left. There was one big change! It was dark when we got ready to walk in the mornings! That was different! There was also a good chance most days, that there would be a sturdy wind blowing.
New Year’s was magical! We were surprised to receive from the hotel management, beautiful flowers and a wonderful fruit tray in celebration! When it was almost midnight, we walked down to the beach. There were fireworks all along the beach, both directions, from the Hilton Hotel down to the Atlantis. They were beautiful! When they were over, we simply walked up the street to our apartment...wonderful!
We were able to watch the ball drop in Time Square the next morning! When you were celebrating New Year’s in the States, it was 10:00 the next morning here! Very odd!!!
It is very difficult to get used the transiency of people in Dubai. I have a friend that I call my “imaginary friend.” She has lived in the States for 20+ years, but is from Egypt. She has four children, and she and her husband are about our age. She spends much of her time in the States and in Egypt, with relatives there. So, with our traveling as well, I see her once-every-three-months or so! We also had some very good friends that have moved back to Australia. They were the first couple to befriend us when we arrived. They moved in January. We will miss them greatly!
When our friends were about to leave, they stayed with us for two days. They have a car, so we were able to do some extra running around. We went to the Meydan! It is said to be the largest racetrack in the world! The grandstand will hold 60,000 people! It is beautiful, with an amazing hotel attached. You can watch the races from your room, as all of the rooms have patios facing the racetrack. It was absolutely beautiful with green, green grass...something that is unusual in Dubai! We went for High Tea at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and were able to get a spectacular view of the Burj Al Arab. It is one of Dubai’s landmarks that is said to be shaped like a sail. We also went to the Madinat, an area with many restaurants, hotels and souks. We enjoyed just exploring the hotels there...BEAUTIFUL, complete with private beaches, gorgeous patios, and delightful pools. Amazing!
I also took a picture of the KFC advertisement. It, like most things in Dubai, is “over the top.” It is huge and sits in the middle of a “round-about.” Notice the size compared to the cars in the picture.
We are looking forward to the new year...going to India with Emily, and Luke visiting us here. We know that God will lead us One Step at a Time as we go! Thank you, God, for that!
Happy New Year from the Hotel!

Best Trip Yet!

There is an old hymn that says, "precious memories, how they linger...how they ever flood my soul." Well, our trip home for Christmas was filled with precious, precious, memories! It was so special to be home...as we visited all over the state of Texas!

We were able to visit and spend such good times with friends in Houston. We literally went from one great visit to another our two days in Houston. So fun to see friends from church and Africa! It was so special to get to collect hugs from precious students and their sweet families. Walking in the doors of Mittelstadt, it was like I had not left! What a special school with dear friends!

Then, on to West Texas! We had the best time visiting with family, and having a family Christmas dinner! My mom was able to see ALL her grandchildren! She said it was one of her best Christmases, and she's had EIGHTY-NINE of them! It was a precious time with family!

Last, right before Christmas Eve, we arrived in New Braunfels. All four of our children came! The absolute best treat EVER! We were able to be with friends and family there for eight days! Much conversation, food, coffee, and hugs were shared by all! What a precious memory for sure!

New Braunfels is special to us because that is where we plan to retire. We were able to see the property we had bought sight-unseen!  We loved it! It is so gratifying to be at a time in our lives where we are thinking about, dare I say it, retirement (am I THAT old???) and then looking forward to the next adventure! To stand in the quiet peaceful country looking up at the beautiful blue sky, precious indeed!

As we came back to Dubai, we were filled with awe and thanksgiving. We are so blessed! We have such wonderful friends and family, have an awesome place to retire, and will once again call Texas "home." But for now, it's good to be back "home" in Dubai, with the reassurance that God leads always One Step at a Time!
